The Sun's Journey Through The Night manifest their visceral chaos once more with their first live album recorded at Reaper Festival one day after the release of the band's latest studio album Worldless
Having been fortunate enough to see Sun's a few times, one being their debut live performance a few years back I can say from first-hand experience that the level of theatre and performance is palpable which is captured perfectly with the album's opener the woefully bleak instrumental Filth Of The Soul
Don't be fooled by this though as underpinning the atmospheric tones and lurking in the shadows is a level of ferocity and intense delivery that currently the band are very much at the forefront of especially as Void Walker spills into the band's most recent studio offering title track Worldless - an album which is worth noting in terms of production has elevated the band even higher in the realm of black metal - the tacks translate really well into the live setting.
The absolute crowing glory of this particular release in the inclusion of the ten-and-a-half-minute Aoens Of Suffering For A Bleeding God because frankly if you want a track that absolutely encompasses everything this band are and really captures their soul this this is the perfect example - it is flawless in every way
Following up Orion serves up a platter of the grotesque layered with emotive and atmospheric elements before concluding with The Black Pyramid
With this live release, The Sun's Journey Through The Night has managed to capture their high level of intensity and musicianship without losing any of the bleak emotion that they emanate
The Sun's Journey Through The Night - Live at Reaperfest MMXXII is out now via Church Road Records
